Journey To Hoima

Updated: Jun 16, 2019

Our journey to Hoima began with a pick up by Matatu (a small van) from our Masaka hotel at 6am.  We travelled, packed to the brim with suitcases, and three other Ugandan passengers, for a two hour drive until we reached Kampala.

In Kampala, we met our next driver, Joseph, at Mengo Hospital.  We stopped for a lovely brunch before our next leg of the trip.

The drive from Kampala to Hoima was breathtaking!  Lush vegetation with bountiful fruit stands along the way.

It took approximately five hours to drive from Kampala to Hoima.  We passed through many villages and beautiful landscapes. The roads were flat and easy to drive on and our driver was very friendly, which made the trip very enjoyable!

We arrived at the Kijungu Hill Hotel around 3pm.  There are many quiet roads to walk on here, which is a welcomed pace compared to the busy city.

Of Note:

Our intention here is to learn about rural midwifery challenges in a global context which can be similar to rural Midwifery in Canada.  We are also here to find out which skills the locals would like us to teach them so that they can improve maternity care for the people here.  Stay tuned for our first week!
