We have arrived in Uganda!

Updated: Jun 5, 2019

We flew individually or in small groups, arriving in Entebbe from May 16th - 17th. After arriving at the Entebbe International Airport, we began our stay at Via Via Guesthouse, with all 8 students and our teachers Cathy, Mickey, Angela, and Prossy. Our first day was spent connecting, resting, monkey-spotting, bird watching, and setting up our cell phone plans for the rest of our trip!

On Saturday May 18th, we celebrated Doctor/Midwife Cathy Ellis’ recent PhD completion, with a lovely buffet dinner of veggies, matoke, beef stew, and cake for dessert. We were so thrilled to be joined by many guests who work in health care in Uganda as well! It was a wonderful way to celebrate Cathy’s achievements and hard work, and to get to know some of the team members who we will work with during our time here.

We all enjoyed breakfast together at Via Via Guesthouse on Sunday morning before dividing into smaller groups to travel to our first placement sites, with one group (Mary, Juliette, and Kalyn with preceptor Angela) off to Lira, and the other group (Stacey, Emily, Nushin, Jessica, and Charlotte, with preceptors Cathy, Mickey, and Prossy) heading to Masaka. The trip from Entebbe to Masaka took about 4 hours, with a toilet break and a longer break at the Equator where we ate lunch and explored the market before heading to our hotel in Masaka.

The accommodations in Masaka have exceeded our expectations! We are staying in the “student” accommodations at Hotel Brovad, which is affordable, has good security, and is within short walking distance to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where we are working. So far, everyone has been so friendly and accommodating, and the weather is lovely!
